How the AP Research composite score works
The AP Research exam is scored in two stages. First your raw performance is converted into a composite: your multiple-choice total out of 0 contributes 0% of the exam and your free-response total out of 29 rubric points contributes 100%. Second, College Board maps that composite onto the 1–5 AP scale using cut points that are re-set every year.
In practical terms, a single correct multiple-choice answer is worth about 0% of your final composite, while a single free-response rubric point is worth about 3.4%. Free-response points are therefore the more valuable currency on this exam — squeezing partial credit out of academic paper (college board scored) moves your composite faster than one more multiple-choice guess.
What each AP Research score means for college credit
Most universities in the United States award credit or placement for a 3 or higher, which on this calculator means a composite of roughly 50% or above. Competitive programs commonly require a 4 (about 65%), and a handful of highly selective departments only accept a 5 (about 80%).
Credit policies are set department by department, so check the specific policy of each college you are applying to before deciding that a predicted score is "good enough". A predicted 3 that sits close to the 4 boundary is usually worth one more round of practice, because a few rubric points can move you across the line.
